TV tonight: Jane's in jail on tonight's 'Mentalist'

Mike Hughes | TV America

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE: "The Mentalist," 10:01 p.m., CBS.

Maybe this is the new trend: Take the hero out of his turf, confine him ... then watch him solve a case.

In other shows, Dr. Greg House saved a life as a hospital patient and dabbled in lives when he was in a mental institution. Adrian Monk cracked a crime in a strange town, in the midst of amnesia.

Now it's Patrick Jane's turn. Arrested for illegally spying on his nemesis, Bosco, he's been jailed. There, of course, he tries to help solve a murder.

TONIGHT'S ODDITY: "The Real Housewives of Orange County" season-opener, 10 p.m., Bravo.

If your idea of entertainment involves high-decibel confrontations, then this is for you. By the end of this reality hour, people are screaming in the best style of pro wrestling or Jerry Springer.

Last season, the others were suspicious of Gretchen Rossi, a 30-year-old beauty engaged to a man who was 53, rich, five-times-divorced and facing acute leukemia. He died; not much later, she was dating a familiar "Real Housewives" guy and controversial photos of her were on the Internet. Now she and the others share loud insults.

Other choices

• World Series, 7:30 p.m., Fox. If needed, here's the seventh and deciding game. If it's not, Fox will have new episodes of "Bones" and "Fringe."

• "Survivor," 8 p.m., CBS. After the jolt two weeks ago of losing its leader (Russell Swan) for medical reasons, the Galu tribe recovered and returned to winning. Now it leads Foa Foa, eight people to four; the Foa Foa people scramble for a way to avoid elimination when the tribes merge.

• "Community," 8 p.m., NBC. When the others learn Jeff is living in his car, they try to help. Meanwhile, Annie gives dating advice to Troy, whom she secretly loves.

• "The Office," 9 p.m., NBC. After furiously trying to avoid it, Jim and Pam must go on a double date with her mom (Linda Purl) and Michael.

• "Grey's Anatomy," 9 p.m., ABC. The family of a 10-year-old patient has promised a substantial donation; the situation worsens and Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) has ethical doubts. Meanwhile, with Izzie gone, Alex is stuck with her medical bills.

• "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 9 p.m., CBS. Two seemingly unrelated murders may have a connection.

• "30 Rock," 9:31 p.m., NBC. It's time to hold auditions for the new cast member. Liz and Pete try to rig the process; Jenna and Tracy seek their own candidates.

• "The Jay Leno Show," 10 p.m., NBC. Wanda Sykes, whose Saturday late show opens this weekend on Fox, is the in-studio guest. Also, Rachael Ray answers the "10 at 10" questions and Dan Finnerty - who previously did a funny bit serenading at a car wash - returns.

• "The League," 10:30 p.m., FX. Now that Pete has split from his wife, the guys are worried that this will hurt their own love lives. That's especially a problem for Ruxin, still waiting to resume sex after his baby was born. The result is erratic, at best, but has some funny moments.
