TV this weekend: 'Nature: Born Wild'

Mike Hughes | TV America

Nature has some bad mothers who ignore their babies. It also has some bad baby spiders who team up to literally devour their mother.

Mostly, however, it has great moms - plus the penguin dads who guard their babies during weeks of Antarctic cold, while their wives seek food. It has cruel lions and chimps who kidnap or kill babies; it has female elephants, raising babies as a group project. These are fascinating stories, beautifully filmed.

WWII pilot's tale examined in 'Case'

WEEKEND'S MUST-SEE II: "Cold Case," 10 p.m. Sunday, CBS.

During World War II, we're told, women pilots had only civilian status. Many died during domestic crashes; none received military honors.

Now Lily tries to learn who sabotaged a woman's plane back in 1944. The story strains credibility, but it's still involving and brings back some veteran actors. John Aniston (Jennifer's dad) and Michael Learned ("The Waltons") play the older versions of Wolf and Louise.

TODAY AND SUNDAY: Baseball overload.

The World Series moves to Philadelphia now, where the Phillies host the Yankees for games three (7:30 p.m. today) and four (8 p.m. Sunday). That means no "Cops" or cartoons for Fox.

And football? NBC doesn't have a pro game Sunday, but there are college games everywhere tonight. The MSU-Minnesota game (8 p.m., Big Ten Network) faces others on NBC, ABC, ESPN and ESPN2.

Also tonight

• Movie marathon, noon to 9:35 p.m., Disney. While waiting to go trick-or-treating, kids can catch family films. Disney airs its four "Halloweentown" movies at noon, 1:35 p.m., 3:05 p.m. and 4:40 p.m.; then the entertaining "Twitches" films are at 6:20 and 8 p.m., with Tia and Tamera Mowry as twins unaware of their roots in a magical kingdom.

• "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 9 p.m., CBS. Here's a rerun of the episode in which Grissom announced he would be leaving.

• "Roseanne," 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., TV Land. Among other things, this show always had the best Halloween episodes. Here they are, back-to-back.

Also Sunday

• "Masterpiece Contemporary: Place of Execution," 9-10:30 p.m., PBS, concludes next week. Everything is crumbling for a TV reporter. She feuds with her somber mom and her rebellious daughter. And at the last minute, a cop has pulled out of her documentary about a murder case 45 years ago.

• "Three Rivers," 9 p.m., CBS. This is the episode - scheduled previously, then delayed - in which Andy does emergency surgery on his wife's police partner.

• "Brothers & Sisters," 10:01 p.m., ABC. Kevin and Scotty feel Michelle may be their perfect surrogate. She's played by Roxy Olin, whose parents are both on the show; Ken Olin produces and plays David Caplan, Patricia Wettig plays Holly Harper.

WEEKEND'S MUST-SEE:
"Nature: Born Wild," 8 p.m. Sunday, PBS.
