As South Africa seethed under apartheid, an Englishman held secret conferences. He put white leaders alongside Thabo Mbeki, who would later follow Nelson Mandela as president.
That story is told here with quiet subtlety and skill. There's superb work from Jonny Lee Miller, Chiwetel Ejiofor and William Hurt, as the principals trying to bring change through negotiation. Betty confronts Don on 'Mad Men'
WEEKEND'S MUST -SEE II: "Mad Men," 10 p.m., AMC. Last week, Betty Draper found her husband's secret documents, showing that he's been lying about his past and even about his identity. Tonight, she confronts him. The result packs a strong emotional impact, right up the final line of dialog.
Today and Sunday
"Latino in America," 8-10 p.m. both nights, CNN; repeating at 11 p.m., 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.; second half at same times Sunday. If you missed this documentary, here's a second chance. Tonight, Soledad O'Brien notes that "Garcia" is the eighth-most-common surname in the U.S., then visits a wide range of Garcias. On Sunday, she meets people groping - some successfully, some not - for prosperity. Also today
"The Perfect Storm" (2000), 6 and 8:30 p.m., Ion. On a real-life day in 1991, three storms converged off the coast of Massachusetts. In the same way, elements converged to make this a much better film than one could expect. Director Wolfgang Peterson had a great cast - led by George Clooney, Diane Lane and Mark Wahlberg - and Oscar-nominated special effects. "Lansing at 150" 8 p.m., Channel 6. A WLNS news special looks at Lansing's 150th birthday. "Milk" (2008), 8 p.m., HBO. Here's Sean Penn's Oscar-winning work as gay activist Harvey Milk. The film also won an Oscar for its script and had six more nominations, including best picture. "Saturday Night Live," 11:29 p.m., NBC. The season opener, hosted by Megan Fox, reruns. It had its moments, including music by U2 and a funny bit with flight attendants offering devastating news. Sunday
"Edward Scissorhands" (1990), 7:30 p.m., ABC Family. Using an odd story - a lonely guy (Johnny Depp) with scissors for hands - Tim Burton again established himself as one of the world's great directors. For further proof, catch Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005) at 3 p.m., "Corpse Bride" (also 2005) at 5:30 and "Beetle Juice" (1988) at 10. "Desperate Housewives," 9 p.m., ABC. The attack of Julie continues to bring aftershocks; she has a secret and a gun. Meanwhile, Gabrielle does battle after being called an unfit mother "Curb Your Enthusiasm," 9 p.m., HBO. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld toss around ideas for the "Seinfeld" reunion show. "Bored to Death," 9:35 p.m., HBO. The case itself is fairly lame, but there are wonderful moments from Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis, as they wait and puff pot. "Storm Chasers," 10 p.m.. Discovery Channel. After all the frantic adrenalin, there's a mini-moment here that stops us short. The overwrought storm chasers, stuck in mud and helpless, meet an easygoing Texas farmer. Opposites collide in a fascinating way.
